Since this is a children's book review, I ought to warn you: The niece thought it was an ok story and she gave this 3 stars. (He is an odd child.) He also liked the little boy in the river with a barrel tied to his back that caught Ping. He wanted to spank the duck himself and make it quack. The art is lovely and the river looks like a place filled with light. He does find his boat and he is glad to get a spank to be with his family. The next day, Ping searches the Yellow river for the boat and almost ends up someone’s dinner. One day, he was late and he saw he would be last, so he hid in the reeds and the boat sails away. If you are the last duck, the man will give you a spank on the way up. The owner of the little boat will put up a ramp and let all the ducks out and then they walk up the ramp to get back on the boat. Ping lives with his large duck family on a boat just for ducks. It was before the Caldecott award started. It’s getting to be 100 years now, published in 1933. I see why the story of Ping is still around.
